A Beginner’s Guide to Fasting

November 13, 2020 | By | Fasting, Nutrition, Programs

Are you brand new to fasting, but not sure where to start? We’ve been there too! It can feel really overwhelming with a lot of questions like “What can I drink while fasting?” “Does this break a fast?” or simply figuring out what times to fast or feast can initially feel like a scheduling nightmare.

The great news is that fasting (also referred to as time-restricted eating) is something that our bodies want to do naturally every single day. Think about it, when you go to bed at night your body abstains from food anywhere from 6-12 hours. If you just add a couple more hours on during the day, congrats- you have fasted! It’s that simple.  Sustaining from eating for even just 14-16 hours can give your body a chance to get into ketosis (a fat burning state) or start rebuilding cells to strengthen your immune system.

Looking to get started with fasting but not sure where to start? Here are our super simple steps on how to get started!

First, Make The Choice For A Change

First things first, make the choice to change your habits, strengthen your immune system, heal your body, burn through your sugar stores and enter ketosis (burning fat for energy), the benefits are nearly endless.  Fasting can help with mental clarity, balance hormones, manage insulin resistance & type 2 diabetes, leaky gut, and more.  If you are dealing with any of these health issues, talk to your physician or a functional medicine MD to come up with a safe fasting plan for you!

Next, Plan Your Fasting Days

Congratulations! You’ve made a choice towards optimal health& longevity!  Your next step will be to pick a fasting program that fits with your lifestyle.  Starting with 14-16 hours and working up to longer fasts is how most of us start!

As you get comfortable with Intermittent Fasting, your body will adjust to being in Ketosis and tackling a fast such as One Meal A Day (OMAD) or an Extended Fast (over 24 hours) will get easier as you tackle each fast.

Then, Understand your Fasting & Feasting Windows

We highly recommend planning your fasting habits, this is key to success! Depending on your goals, it will help you decide if you can drink things like water only, black coffee or tea, bulletproof coffee (black coffee with a bit of fat like grass-fed butter), bone broths or high fat shakes.  It is also important to know how to eat during your eating window, for most people and most goals, you will get the most bang for your bite with whole foods with a focus on protein, healthy fats, and whole food carbs (like sweet potato, veggies, fruit & nuts versus crackers, bread and donuts).

If this is a big change for your eating style, you can tackle one change at a time, or go full-on, cold-turkey swaps; whichever is better for you!
